Chester mayor advocates for sales tax proposal
Read excerpt:
CHESTER, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — In the town of Chester, where history and small-town charm intertwine, Mayor Lacey Hendrix is spearheading a movement to revitalize her beloved community.
Hendrix, who returned to Chester after years abroad, is advocating for a sales tax to fund essential services and infrastructure improvements.
Chester is a historic town with a population of 144. It was once a bustling timber hub along the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway. The town still boasts some of its original infrastructure, including a historic building from 1887. Hendrix, who was born and raised in Chester, reflects on the town’s historical significance with pride.
“The building was built in 1887, so 200 years before I was born, which I think is pretty cool,” Hendrix said. “It’s the only surviving building here in Chester that was original to this side of the creek.”
Hendrix’s connection to Chester has driven her to advocate for a sales tax, aiming to address the town’s needs. Chester currently lacks a gas station, park, and police department. The town operates on a tight annual budget of under $40,000, making it difficult to fund essential services and improvements.
